Clever Feeding Station

Turn antique kids' chairs into food-and-water stations that stand at just the right height for your four-legged friends. Simply cut bowl-size holes in the chair seats, lining the edges with rubber weather strips to prevent slipping.

Recycle an old Drawer

Add storage and display space on a blank bathroom wall by converting an old dresser drawer into a decorative medicine cabinet. Cut a plywood shelf to fit inside and nail it in place. Paint the cabinet to match your room, and decorate the back with wallpaper or scrapbook paper, if desired (glue the paper in place before you secure the shelf). Screw eye hooks into the bottom and thread a painted dowel rod through for a towel bar.

Unique Bookcase

Turn a nonfunctioning fireplace into a practical and pretty storage space by outfitting it with shelves. Measure the opening and build a plywood insert to fit snugly inside. Cut shelves to fit across. Then paint the pieces and wallpaper the back of the insert. Screw the shelves in place and set the insert in the firebox. And wa-la unexpected bookcase.

Sweet Potato Soup

Makes: 4 servings
Start to Finish: 30 minutes
  • 2
    lb. sweet potatoes
  • 3
    green onions, coarsely chopped
  • 1
14-oz. can vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1
    cup whipping cream
  • 1
    tsp. curry powder
  • Salt and ground black pepper
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 2
oz. white cheddar cheese, shredded (1/2 cup)
  • Paprika (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Scrub potatoes then pierce in several places with tip of knife. Microcook potatoes, on white paper towels, on 100% (high) power for 10 minutes or until tender, turning once halfway through cooking. Carefully halve potatoes lengthwise. Hold with an oven mitt, then scoop flesh into a food processor. Add onions and half the broth. Process until smooth.
2. Transfer pureed potatoes to a large saucepan. Add remaining broth and cream. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Stir in 3/4 teaspoon of the curry powder and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.
3. Meanwhile, for crisps, lightly coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray or cover with parchment paper. In a small bowl toss together the cheese and remaining 1/4 teaspoon curry powder. Evenly divide in 8 mounds, 2 inches apart, on baking sheet; flatten mounds slightly. Bake 4 to 5 minutes, until melted and beginning to brown around edges. Cool slightly. Remove from baking sheet with a metal spatula. Sprinkle with paprika. Serve crisps with soup.

Fall Decorating Ideas

Summer's big color grows brighter and bolder in fall. The hot chartreuse of Granny Smith apples is a prime example. Nest a stocky candle in the middle of a glass salad or punch bowl and fill with green apples. No need to use a tall candle; simply elevate a short one with a candlestick or aluminum can. Then hide the stand with apples.

The Last Word

The greatest comfort we have in the time of loss is in knowing that death does not have the last word-Jesus does!
And His Word declares, "I am the resurrection, and the life... Whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die."

Guys say a little prayer for my church family tonight and a couple close friends of mine. We lost an amazing woman today to cancer. She was a great mother, grandmother, friend, and all around great person in general. She will truly be missed. She was a family friend for many years and I'm so lucky I got to know her.
Michael & Brandy Davidson

I can't even describe how sad I am to hear about Alice. She was a very special lady and will be greatly missed. In my thoughts and prayers.

Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted, Father I pray that Bub and Danielle may receive mercy and find grace during their time of heaviness. You and your family will be in my prayers.
Sharon & Danny Finley

I have asked the questions why but I guess the answers for another time. So instead I pray, with every tear and be thankful for the time we had you here. I wanna live my life just like you did. Make the most of my time just like you did. And I want to make my home up in the sky just like you did. (RIP Alice....I love you!)
Amanda Jones

well bub.... I'm so sorry, i have no clue how you feel right now.. I know Alice was to you what my nana is to me.. and my other granny of course.. but you know, Alice was kinda like a gran to me too.. i know you know she's better off, and some times we just don't understand why things have to be the way they are... but the plans are based on specific purposes that will only be revealed over in Glory.. but I'm here for ya and i love ya and miss ya..

Christy, I love you so much critter.. i know how close you and ally cat was... if anyone in the world could put a smile on your face, it was Alice, no matter if u were in the worst mood she could say something and you couldn't help but start laughing... lol . I'm so so sorry... I know she appreciated all the time you shared with her over the years.. seems like you were always by her side.. if u wasn't at home, u were with her some where! Now you have to make it to where she is, just as we all do. It gives us more reason to press on. Hang in there and know that i Love you and am thinking about you and sending up prayers each time u all run through my mind, which is often. Love you sis :)

ash i love you so dearly. your family is part of my family and i really have no idea how troubled you really are.. but just know that God is with you and He is the one who had this in His will, so you know He'll take care of you. Bible says the Lord giveth and taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord... He knows what he's doing... may not seem like it but deep down beyond the hurt and the whys and wondering, you know that God has a plan in mind when He does all things! I have so many wonderful memories of our dear Alice! She will be missed so very much, but we also have to celebrate her opening her eyes in heaven with no more sickness and pain. What a precious person!
Pam Asher

My dear friend Alice, I will miss you so much, I will miss your smile, I will miss your hugs and kisses and your "I love you". I will miss your "kleenex ministry" around the altar. You loved the Lord and you loved people with His love. You leave behind you a great legacy as a woman of God who loved her family and faithfully prayed for their salvation. How many times you have whispered to me, "pray for my family". You didn't spend a lot of time worrying over things because your faith in the Lord was strong and you trusted Him to take care of your problems when you placed them in His hands. You were a winner either way and now you have run your race and entered into eternal rest with the Jesus you loved so much. I will continue to honor your requests to pray for your family.
Beverly Rogers

Love you and going to miss you...Wear that crown with pride...

At the mention of His Great Name.
All the Weak find their strength at the sound of YOUR NAME
Hungry souls receive grace, at the sound of YOUR NAME...

Recipe For Cheesy Mashed Potato Pots/Side Dish

pounds red skinned or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled, if desired and cut up
teaspoon salt
teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Milk (optional)
cup whipping cream
cup shredded American or cheddar cheese
Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a covered large saucepan, cook potatoes in enough boiling water to cover for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender. Drain. Mash with a potato masher or beat with an electric mixer on low speed. Season with the salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. If necessary, add a small amount of milk for desired consistency.

2. Grease four 10- to 12-ounce individual casseroles or custard cups or a 1- to 1-1/2-quart casserole. Spoon potato mixture into prepared casserole(s). In a chilled medium bowl, beat whipping cream with chilled beaters of an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form (tips curl over); fold in cheese. Spoon cheese mixture over potatoes. Place casserole(s) on a baking sheet. Bake, uncovered, about 20 minutes or until lightly browned and heated through. If desired, sprinkle with additional black pepper. Makes 4 servings.
